The Health Benefits of Taro & Poi

By Sa-Tya T-Yamai Caravalho

Among the many culinary treasures of Hawaii, two traditional delicious foods that have been enjoyed for generations are poi and taro. Beyond their rich flavor and cultural significance, poi and taro offer many health benefits. Poi is a traditional Hawaiian dish made from the root of the taro plant. It is prepared by mashing cooked taro root and mixing it with water to achieve a smooth, pudding-like consistency. Poi has been a staple food in Hawaiian cuisine for centuries and is cherished for its unique taste and versatility. Taro, the main ingredient in Poi, is a starchy root vegetable native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It has a nutty flavor and a creamy texture when cooked, making it versatile in various dishes. It can be eaten alone after cooking, but it is highly enjoyed being made into Poi. As the main ingredient of Poi is Taro, it is rich with nutrients, promotes heart health, is digestive supportive, and is gluten-free.

Taro and Poi are packed with nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is a good source of Vitamin A, B, and C, which plays important roles in immune function, vision health, and energy metabolism. Minerals like potassium are also in Taro, which helps regulate blood pressure and heart health. They can help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and other heart problems. Poi is high in dietary fiber due to the Taro, which aids in digestion and promotes gut health. Fiber helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels and may reduce colon cancer. The simple ingredients water and taro in Poi, means it is naturally gluten-free, making it an excellent option for individuals with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. It provides a delicious and nutritious alternative to gluten-containing grains.

There are lots of delicious ways to enjoy Poi and Taro. Poi can be eaten on its own or used as a versatile ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes. Taro can be boiled, steamed, or roasted and used in soups, stews, stir-fries, and even desserts! Incorporating Taro and Poi into your diet will not only satisfy your taste buds, but also support your overall health.

The Benefits of Recycling

Earth day is a day where many of us can make a difference.

One of the ways you can make a difference and even be rewarded is the HI-5 project. You can recycle your cans, bottles, paper, and boxes, and you can be awarded money from the state. Or you can donate to recycling nonprofits such as Keep America Beautiful, and The Recycling Partnership.

Some Benefits of Recycling:

This Earth day you should do YOUR part in sustaining earth by recycling. Let's keep our beaches pristine and beautiful.
